Government
New Hampshire had a unique government during colonial times that was very different than how the government is run now. In 1679, the British government declared that New Hampshire could be an independent colony but that the colony must be strongly influenced by the nearby colony of Massachusetts. Because of this, New Hampshire did not have its own governor but had a lieutenant governor, who mainly focused on the relationship between New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
